Al Jazeera English’s main twitter account, @AJEnglish, provided exceptional coverage of the news stories that shaped 2019.

Sharing the human story remained the focal point of our coverage in 2019. By shedding light on the stories of under-reported communities, we aimed to make news more personal and to focus on the human stories. From the Rohingya crisis to the plight of the Palestinians, to the most vulnerable living through the war in Yemen, we covered the untold stories of those most affected by news events … up close and personal.

Important events and anniversaries were marked in carefully-curated twitter threads, breaking down information in an easily-accessible manner and utilising many different social assets to create greater impact and to generate conversation.

Using various social formats to keep the feed dynamic, twitter users were able to follow the backstory and the latest developments with ease.

Another element of our Twitter coverage was facilitating important conversations that mattered. Ahead of the Nigeria elections, we created a community around #NigeriaSpeaks, providing a platform for opinions on and stories from the ground, and guiding our coverage on the topics that were of interest to our audience.

By providing a platform with which our followers could engage and interact, we were able to tackle the important topics that were flagged as a concern ahead of the elections and ensure that our news coverage was reflective of our readers’ needs.
